Small Things Can Make a Big Difference

Who doesn't believe they know how to boil an egg?  I would raise my hand on this one but sometimes even the simple small things might need to be practiced better.  With that in mind, I leave you this article from Paula Deen on how to boil the perfect egg.  Enjoy and learn something new.

Learning Something New -- Mimi G Style Lesson 1: Sewing Basics

"She makes coverings for herself; her clothing is fine linen and purple."  Proverbs 31:22 Yes, the Proverbs 31 woman could obviously sew.  Doesn't mean you Have to learn to sew but I like it and if you do, here are some beginning lessons to get you started. Learning to teach yourself to sew is a gargantuan task.  I know, because I'm one of those people.  Well, technically I didn't really teach myself all by myself.  I've had a few classes but to increase those skills has been a challenge but I'm loving it.  Using Youtube videos and patterns helps tremendously. But to save you some of the time and mistakes I've made, I'm sharing with you someone who I feel is an awesome teacher.  She's awesome to me because she's transparent, honest and willing to share. I hope you enjoy and learn something yourself. Happy sewing and becoming.......

In Honor of the Proverbs31 Woman

Image
Proverbs 10:14  S he is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar. In honor of this amazing woman, I decided to take a nutrition class to learn all I could regarding nutrition.  It appears that she went out of her way to bring the best produce to her family.   The class was 6 weeks long and I received a certificate showing that I learned something but really it takes time and patience to learn because it's ongoing. Albeit, I did learn some valuable information.  Some I already knew about and some that caught me off guard.  For example, I got a list of herbs and spices to use to cook with instead of a lot of salt.  Now, I know about herbs and spices but this info broke it down so that I would know what herbs and spices go well with what foods.  Lovin it! All a woman has to do is cook, right....well true, but it's good to have information that keeps you from making unnecessary mistakes.  And even if you'r...

Teaching History Through Art to our Youth

Image
Spreading our culture to youth is one of my loves and I will continue to do it to help our children "see" their awesome strength and beauty."  My latest Black History Adventure was at Grand Crossing Library.  I did a dramatization of Sojourner Truth's "Ain't I a Woman" speech at the Ohio Women's Convention Center in 1851.  We talked about freedom--women's rights and the rights of slaves to be free.  We also discussed how slaves used symbols and patterns in quilts to escape to freedom then we made paper quilts ourselves of those patterns.  I have uploaded the pics on this page.   Next event is Poetry and Poetry forms in April---and work w/seniors for Asian American Month in May.  We'll probably make gorgeous paper fans.  Many ideas a brewing----can't tell you though, you'll just have to come and check us out.   "Be always artistically focused and life beautiful"......smooches!!

Kwanzaa in the Community

Image
Did a Kwanzaa Program at the Chicago Public Library Grand Crossing and I enjoyed it tremendously.  Not because of the program itself, which was also nice, but because I felt I made a little lee way with the kids.  They were attentive and appeared as if they were listening.  I actually got them excited.  They even wanted to know what other classes I would be teaching in the future. I love it when kids have those moments and begin to see possibilities in life.  In fact, that's what we should be doing with our kids often.  I'm working hard on my children although they are passed the age of teaching, to give them a sense of hope and excitement about what they are able to accomplish in life especially if they  maintain a positive attitude towards themselves and others. It's a slow work and progress but I believe they are beginning to see the light.......like a continual drop of water, we lay the plans and remain consistent our efforts will eventually pa...

This Art Life is a Challenge-but I'm Movin Forward

Image
Haven't communicated with your guys in a long time so I need to give many updates. What's the 411.....well, the hope is I'll be crafting now for JoAnn Fabrics.  I'm excited.  I'll be doing beginning classes but it's a great start, such as  sewing, crocheting and even jewelry making.  I've also been involved lately with the CPL Innovation Lab.  The classes are free and use digital imaging to carve 3D models of images via laser intensive machines.  I'm also taking classes at Lurie Gardens.  My first one is Candle-making Inspired by Nature.  I'm still working it out at the Center for Green Technology and their upcoming classes.  You can never learn too much, another one of my motto's.  Finally, I'm planning on teaching how to create unique and original tablescapes for the holidays at the Library and I'm involved in another free art project with the Woman Made Gallery. My most prized accomplishment is the picture I'm ...
